Here’s a look at some of the events our service platoons have lined up this month. For more information on joining a service platoon near you and taking part in upcoming project or social event, visit our website or contact our team.

Atlanta

May 2 – Habitat for Humanity ReStore
Platoon members helped with unloading delivery trucks, assisting customers as they shop and organizing items within the store.

May 16 – HAND Service Project
HAND is a civic engagement neighborhood beautification project developed by Philadelphia-based Proud Neighbor and hosted locally by Genesis Prevention Coalition and the VetCorps Project to bring residents and volunteer organizations together to help improve neighborhood homes, blocks and communities through acts of kindness. This project will consist of gutters/fascia boards to be replaced and painted for a local veteran.

Baltimore

May 14 – Platoon Get Together
Come join us for a get together on Thursday, May 14. We will have the opportunity to meet one another and learn more about The Mission Continues and our specific mission in Baltimore. More information on our website.

Columbia, MO

May 30 – Columbia Boys and Girls Club
The platoon will be joining volunteers from Veterans United erect a new playground, paint seven picnic tables, plant 21 trees, and build two large gardens.

Detroit

May 25 – Wins for Warriors 9K Run/Walk
Wins for Warriors, the lead sponsor of Detroit 1st Service Platoon is hosting a 9K run/walk on Memorial Day.

Houston

May 2 – Building an Outdoor Classroom
Houston 3rd Platoon continued their mission on May 2nd with KIPP to build an outdoor classroom at KIPP Zenith Academy, serving nearly 800 students from Pre-K through 4th grade.

May 3 – Houston 2nd Platoon BBQ

May 25 – Memorial Day Wreath Ceremony
Members of Houston 2nd Platoon will join other VSOs and community members for a wreath laying ceremony on Memorial Day.

Indianapolis

Jacksonville

May 5 – Support event at Woodland Acres
In Partnership with 5 Star Veterans Center and Feeding Northeast Florida, the platoon assisted in the unloading food donations, sorting donations, and distribution of the food to community members. Like all service events, the platoon will also be assisting with clean up.

Nashville

May 16 – Pleasant View Community Park Project
Our first service project of the year. Help us bring a community together to honor a fallen hero at Pleasant View Community Park. Veterans will put a 30 foot flagpole up in honor of a fallen hero, LCPL Gabe Raney, plant flowers around the base and in the park, and build two tree benches.

New York City

May 2 – Rebuild in the Rockaways
The platoons partnered together a service project with Friends of Rockaways to help rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.

May 7 – Veteran Get Together
Platoons, Fellows, staff and supporters are coming together to learn more about upcoming events in the NYC area. Learn more about the event here.

May 15-16 – Bronx Service Project
On May 15th and May 16th, The Mission Continues will be partnering with Guggenheim Partners and Bronx nonprofits, Dreamyard and Sustainable South Bronx, to build parks and install artistic solar rooftops that will help District 5, the poorest congressional district in the country, become a place of pride. St. Louis

May 16 – Project at EarthDance Farms
Platoon members have several tasks to complete: deconstruction of old barn, removing invasive species, hanging gates, building shelves in shipping container, painting shipping container, painting the house/main office, and cleaning the inside of the house/main office.

St. Paul

May 16 – Platoon Get Together
We are still shaping the mission focus of the platoon, but we are getting close and getting excited about what’s to come. If you have a soccer ball, please bring it.  They have ten at the facility that we can use, but everyone is going to want their own. We are planning to BBQ on the patio when we are done, so go ahead and work up an appetite. RSVP here.

San Antonio

May 16 – Armed Forces Day River Parade
The service platoon will commandeer a platoon-themed float for the river parade.

May 22 – Flag Day at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery
Members of the platoon will flags in the national cemetery at headstones of veterans in preparation for Memorial Day.

May 2 – Hilltop Middle School (see photos from the event on Facebook)
Service platoon members helped transform a school’s garden this weekend in San Diego. The garden will host an after-school program and offer a safe place for students to engage in healthy and educational activity.

May 16 – Service Platoon Sports Day and BBQ

San Francisco 

May 15-17 – Supporting the Bay to Breakers Race
Come join the glorious celebration of the human spirit with The Mission Continues Bay Area for SF’s Bay to Breakers racing event. We will be sending volunteers to assist the event hosts ensure a safe and fun environment for everyone! Volunteers can sign up for a slot anytime during the three day long event.

Washington, DC

May 2 – Hart Middle School
Platoon members joined Points of Light at Hart Middle School to build picnic tables, set up rain barrels, plant shrubs, and help with general school beautification. The platoon joined Bravo Class 2014 Fellows for a large scale project at Hart Middle one year ago.

May 16 – Teens Run DC
The 2nd platoon will organize an obstacle course on the National Mall for local youth in partnership with Teens Run DC.

May 23 – Combatting Veterans Homelessness
Members of 1st platoon will be visiting an area shelter on to survey homeless veterans in the general population and to assess housing and employment needs. The goal is to make homeless veterans aware of assistance out there and helping other agencies in DC determine how much housing is needed to solve the homeless veteran epidemic this year.
