The Richmond Service Platoon was formed in 2016 and is committed to connecting Richmond area veterans with each other and offering the opportunity for them to continue their service in Richmond's under-resourced communities. Our platoon's focus is on restoration and improvement and addressing food Insecurity. We have partnered with organizations supporting the restoration efforts of Evergreen Cemetery, one of three historic African American cemeteries in Richmond, Virginia. In 2019, Evergreen Cemetery was designated as a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) world heritage site (vpm.org) as part of the UNESCO's "Routes of Enslaved Peoples: Resistance, Liberty and Heritage" project (en.unesco.org/themes/fostering-rights-inclusion/slave-route). We have also partnered with Peter Paul Development Center to tackle food insecurity in Richmond's East End. We are always looking for new opportunities for additional partnerships. Please contact Jessica Hladky at jhladky@missioncontinues.org for more information.
