MISSION: In Greater Boston our platoon is committed to supporting individuals and families experiencing food and/or housing insecurity in Eastern Massachusetts.

DEFINITIONS:
- Food Insecurity: Lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life.
- Housing Insecurity: An overarching term that includes multiple facets of the housing problems people may experience including affordability, safety, quality, insecurity and homelessness.

NARRATIVE: Each night across our state there are thousands of individuals and families who go to sleep without a safe, stable roof over their head or adequate food in their stomach. The issues of housing and food insecurity are closely related, but still very separate issues. In Massachusetts, an individual employed making minimum wage (currently $12/hour) would need to work 113 hours a week or make $33.81/hour to be able to afford a two-bedroom apartment at average fair market rent rates. Each day, people are forced to choose between paying for housing, food, transportation, childcare, healthcare, education, and more.

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, over 18,400 individuals in Massachusetts were experiencing homelessness on a single night in 2019. Coupling that data with the “What Hunger Looks like in Massachusetts” report from Feeding America, which states that 1 in 11 people in the state struggle with hunger, it paints a clear picture that food and housing insecurity are serious public health issue in the Commonwealth.

Our Greater Boston Platoon recognizes the serious and long-term negative food and housing insecurity can have both on individuals and our society as a whole, and are actively working to be part of the solution by helping to increase the organizational capacity of key providers focused in addressing these issues. We are tackling the issues of food and housing insecurity through a holistic, multifaceted approach by designing our service operation to focus on:
- food growth and production locally,
- food justice education in public schools,
- food distribution to those most in need,
- improving family congregate shelters to make the safer and healthier,
- creating spaces for free clothing and toiletries in local schools for children and youth,
- building new homes, and
- supporting advocacy work to increase access to affordable housing

We invite you to join our veteran-led movement of service and
be part of the solution with the Greater Boston Platoon!
