Platoon Leader Summit Project @ Joplin

September 23, 2017

08:00 AM - 11:15 AM CDT

Chicago Platoon

Event overview

Join us as we give Joplin Elementary a much needed make over! Joplin Elementary is located in Auburn Gresham in Chicago's south side, serving students PreK through 8th grade. 98% of students are African American and 95% of students come from low-income households. Because Joplin is part of the Chicago Public Schools system, it ,unfortunately, has suffered from the same budget issues as every other school. Dwindling student attendance, budget shortages and state politics have caused schools to make dramatic cuts. Since school beautification and repair is often the first items removed from their budgets, schools rely on volunteers to make their environments warm and inviting. We'll beautify Joplin by painting, landscaping, installing murals, renovating the teacher lounge, and turning their overgrown courtyard into a teaching garden and we hope to see you there! Special thanks to our Presenting Sponsor for Platoon Leadership Summit, BAE Systems Inc and in-kind sponsor, Benjamin Moore for providing our paint for this project.

Who We Are

In 2025, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) acquired The Mission Continues, bringing two best-in-class organizations together to provide more opportunities for veterans to find community, lead, and serve. Guided by the ethos “If Not Me, Then Who…,” veterans continue their service, build connections, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. Learn more about TMF at travismanion.org

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.
