9/11 Day of Service

September 09, 2017

09:00 AM - 03:30 PM EDT

Washington, DC Platoon

Event overview

The Day: Our 9/11 Day of Service means a lot. It marks an important day. This September 9th, The Mission Continues Washington DC Service Platoons would like to invite you to join us as we do what we do; serve a cause greater than ourselves. Every year, in memory of this day, we will continue to rebuild- ourselves, our community, our country. The Cause: UDC College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences is leading the community farming initiatives in DC. One of their sites, East Capitol Urban Farm, is a major step in connecting the community located in areas classified as 'food deserts' to sustainable, healthy foods. There are some important agriculture and natural resource leaders from other land-grant universities looking at the site as well, to figure out how to replicate our goals at other farms. So, our efforts on 9/9 will push East Capitol Farm forward to operationally hosting local kids, the community, and education leaders to provide them with the fruits of their labors and teach them about the efficacy of sustainable, community farming. The Scope: * Expand on community garden to make room for more farmers as well as those requiring wheelchair access * Socialize community area to increase efficacy of training modules on the site for kids * Engineer a STEM education space to enable the next generation of kids to learn about math and sciences * Stand up a farmers market with the ability to host 4 vendors. Farmers market will be accessible by community members who require a handicap accessible space to make purchases at a SNAP and Wic eligible farm stand * Finish the walking trail with markers in yards and meters as well as a place for the community to gather

Who We Are

In 2025, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) acquired The Mission Continues, bringing two best-in-class organizations together to provide more opportunities for veterans to find community, lead, and serve. Guided by the ethos “If Not Me, Then Who…,” veterans continue their service, build connections, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. Learn more about TMF at travismanion.org

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.
