The Day:

Our 9/11 Day of Service means a lot. It marks an important day. This September 9th, The Mission Continues Washington DC Service Platoons would like to invite you to join us as we do what we do; serve a cause greater than ourselves. Every year, in memory of this day, we will continue to rebuild- ourselves, our community, our country.

The Cause:

UDC College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences is leading the community farming initiatives in DC. One of their sites, East Capitol Urban Farm, is a major step in connecting the community located in areas classified as 'food deserts' to sustainable, healthy foods. There are some important agriculture and natural resource leaders from other land-grant universities looking at the site as well, to figure out how to replicate our goals at other farms. So, our efforts on 9/9 will push East Capitol Farm forward to operationally hosting local kids, the community, and education leaders to provide them with the fruits of their labors and teach them about the efficacy of sustainable, community farming.

The Scope:

* Expand on community garden to make room for more farmers as well as those requiring wheelchair access

* Socialize community area to increase efficacy of training modules on the site for kids

* Engineer a STEM education space to enable the next generation of kids to learn about math and sciences

* Stand up a farmers market with the ability to host 4 vendors. Farmers market will be accessible by community members who require a handicap accessible space to make purchases at a SNAP and Wic eligible farm stand

* Finish the walking trail with markers in yards and meters as well as a place for the community to gather

What To Wear :

Clothes that can get dirty! Feel free to rock your straw hats, boro trousers, or, [insert] other farmer's gear for funsies. Wear your Mission Continues t-shirts. If you don't have a tee yet, let us know your shirt size, and we will hook you up!

What To Bring :

You, your family, and friends for some hands-on community engagement. We'll take care of all the dirt and tools!

Parking :

There is a large parking lot (free on the weekend) behind the Capitol Heights Metro Station. (right across the street from the farm!) Please try to park in that lot so we can keep the limited parking on site available for those who may need closer access. Street parking is also available.

Inclement Weather Plan :

Light/Medium rainfall we will continue to Rock It! If weather becomes severe, we will halt the project and take proper safety precautions.
