Her Mission Continues - Support HAVEN

March 23, 2019

10:00 AM - 02:00 PM EDT

Detroit Platoon

Event overview

March is Women's History Month, and The Mission Continues honors the women who serve through #HerMission. Join Detroit Platoon members in honor of Women's History Month to support HAVEN. As Oakland County’s only comprehensive program for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, HAVEN provides shelter, counseling, advocacy and educational programming to nearly 30,000 people each year. #HerMission The post-9/11 generation includes the highest percentage of women veterans in American history. Despite the Combat Exclusion Policy in place until early 2013, these women veterans are significantly more likely to have experienced combat compared with women who served in prior eras. They are also younger and more diverse than their male peers. These women veterans are also participating in The Mission Continues programs at high rates – 34% of Mission Continues Fellows are women veterans, as are 31% of service platoon members. In an effort to understand the reasons for this high rate of participation, The Mission Continues commissioned a study of female veterans in our programs. The results shed light on a generation of women who are proud of their service yet encountered challenges and obstacles unique of their male peers. The findings also underscore the importance of strengthening communities here at home.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
