Remembrance of 9/11 Service Project

September 19, 2018

11:00 AM - 03:00 PM EDT

New York City Platoon

Event overview

As the nation observes the upcoming anniversary of September 11, 2001, New York City-based post-9/11 veterans and supporters of The Mission Continues are deploying to Brownsville for an impactful service project. Located in Brooklyn, Brownsville is a community of almost 90,000 residents and has long been one of New York City’s most dangerous neighborhoods. For decades, Brownsville has struggled with the highest rates of housing instability, unemployment, child welfare involvement, incarceration and chronic disease in Brooklyn. Since 2016, The Mission Continues Brooklyn Platoon has been focusing its efforts to revitalizing neighborhood parks so that our combined efforts in Brownsville can be a catalyst to improving the community and so that we can create a new narrative of prosperity and change that residents have been longing for. Veterans, community members, and supporters will spend this day of service working side-by-side to revitalize Van Dyke Playground to ensure that residents have a beautiful safe space to play and gather with neighbors, friends, and family. This service project is part of an ongoing collaboration between The Mission Continues and the Brownsville Partnership and is designed to create quality public spaces that positively contribute to people’s health, happiness, and well being in Brownsville. We look forward to having you serve alongside us.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
