June 25, 2018

09:00 AM - 02:00 PM PDT

Los Angeles Platoon

Event overview

Where We’re Serving
Home of the Bulldogs, David Starr Jordan High School joined The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools in 2011. Located in Watts and led by Principal Carlos Montes, Jordan is the only high school in Watts that offers an interdisciplinary College Preparatory Program that includes: Honors and Advanced Placement (AP) classes, an Art Academy, an award winning Athletics Program for girls and boys, as well as a Special Needs Program that meets the complex demands of its exceptional learners. Jordan is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) through 2022, and is proud to serve the entire community and all learners.
Why We’re Serving
Jordan High School has undergone an incredible renovation in the past few years, and we’re joining in efforts to lend an extra group of capable hands. The school serves local youth from the neighboring four public housing developments. On this day of service, volunteers and students will serve together to create a positive example of civic engagement within a community on the rise. This project is another step forward in our continued investment in Jordan High School.
What We’ll Be Doing
Renovate - Overhauling the school’s weight room by demolishing old lockers, installing new mirrors and workout equipment, adding a fresh coat of paint, and upgrading message boards. Beautify - Adding plants and landscaping to bring color and vibrancy to the school’s grounds. Transform - Converting an existing baseball field into a multi-sports field, complete with newly built bleachers, benches, and dugouts for fans and teams to enjoy.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
