Service Project

Project Garden Bed-Head

March 17, 2018

09:00 AM - 03:00 PM EDT

Washington, DC Platoon

Event overview

Join DC 5th Platoon and the Washington Youth Garden as we shake off the winter cold and get the Youth Garden ready for the vast pastures of spring! DC's very own Washington Youth Garden (WYG) uses the garden cycle as a tool to enrich science learning, inspire environmental stewardship and cultivate healthy food choices in youth and families. Nestled in the southern section of the National Arboretum, the WYG was created to teach children horticultural skills and environmental awareness, as well as life skills like team building and personal responsibility. With their unique hands-on programs and numerous community and school partnerships, the WYG uses an environmental focus to include nutrition and cooking education to promote healthy lifestyles through gardening. In 2001, the WYG began a successful collaboration with DC Public Schools to deliver their Garden Science program. The Garden Science program increases the capacity of teachers through providing free science enrichment and nutrition education to elementary students, which meets the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) standards. When DC 5th platoon arrives on scene, our main focus of this project will be horticultural: waking the garden from its winter slumber. We will also have fence fortification, grounds improvements, and a build project on the agenda. Chances are, we'll have a project that is right for you. **Emphasis: Kids are HIGHLY encouraged to participate on this project.

Who We Are

In 2025, Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) acquired The Mission Continues, bringing two best-in-class organizations together to provide more opportunities for veterans to find community, lead, and serve. Guided by the ethos “If Not Me, Then Who…,” veterans continue their service, build connections, and thrive in their post-military lives by serving as character role models to youth. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes lives on in the next generation. Learn more about TMF at travismanion.org

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.
