LLFT Patrol - Smoke Alarm Safety with Red Cross

April 28, 2018

10:00 AM - 03:00 PM EDT

Pittsburgh Platoon

Event overview

Homewood Platoon is to conduct another LLFT (Listen, Learn, Fix, Teach) patrol. We will be loading up rucks with whatever tools we can carry, and commencing patrol block by block, looking for residents in need of minor household repairs or work they are unable to take on. It might be clearing a garden, moving some furniture, or changing a tire. If we have the tools to fix it, we handle it on the spot. We will be partnering with the Red Cross, to install new smoke alarms in homes along the way. There are 3 roles in every Home Fire Volunteer Team; Educator, Installer and Documenter: Volunteer Safety Educator: Educates the family on fire safety and assists with completing a fire escape plan while the smoke alarms are being installed. This volunteer should be comfortable speaking with a wide variety of individuals. Volunteer Smoke Alarm Installer: Installs smoke alarms in homes during the event. This volunteer should be comfortable using a step ladder, power drill, and screw driver. Volunteer Documenter: Records information about each home and the number of alarms installed. This volunteer should be comfortable completing basic paperwork. Our strategic focus will consist of four primary elements: Listen to the residents, Learn about them and the neighborhood, help them Fix a problem they haven't been able to address, and if applicable, Teach them how to do the work next time. This project is best fit for ages 14 and up.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
