Service Project

Vacant Lot Transformation with University of Pittsburgh Athletics Day of Service

June 07, 2019

09:00 AM - 04:00 PM EDT

Pittsburgh Platoon

Event overview

Attention Veterans and University of Pittsburgh's Athletic Department staff! Join our Homewood Platoon's Leadership Team, local veterans, Operation Better Block and Pitt Athletics in a day of service where we will be continuing to transform green space in Homewood into a safe, bright, inviting and exciting community space for Homewood's youth and families to enjoy! In March of this year, Homewood Platoon and Operation Better Block started the revitalization of this lot - executing the vision of local resident and longtime community leader - Mary Savage, but there is still much work to be done! On this day of service we will be painting a fence, building a outdoor circuit gym, building picnic tables, planting flowers, painting murals and more! This project is an opportunity for Pitt Athletics Staff to come together in service while serving alongside some of our nation's greatest assets - our military veterans! If you are a veteran, come and show your leadership skills off! This is opportunity to show the community that you aren't done serving when you take off your uniform - that there's a lot of work to still be done in service to country and community and that our veterans are willing to answer that call! There will be 2 shifts for volunteers to plug into during the day - you may attend one shift or both! 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM - 1st Shift 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM - Lunch for all volunteers 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM - 2nd Shift If you are interested in a leadership role at this project please reach out to Derrick Clark!

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
