Veteran's Day: SAFB URBAN FARM

November 11, 2017

08:45 AM - 11:30 AM CST

San Antonio Platoon

Event overview

In honor of Veterans Day, San Antonio 2nd Platoon will report for duty for Fall Harvest in collaboration with San Antonio Food Bank! The San Antonio Food Bank Farm and Garden is the largest urban agriculture initiative within the city of San Antonio. The mission of the agricultural program is to provide fresh, local, and high quality produce to food insecure residents and to educate volunteers about food production as well as our food system at large.Without volunteers to help manage the farm, San Antonio Food Bank could not feed the 58,000 people they help every week. With volunteers like us the SAFB Urban Farm is able to nourish and feed San Antonio families in need. ADDITIONAL NOTES from SAFB: Volunteers may work in and between the garden, orchard, and farm during a volunteer shift. Tasks include planting, transplanting, harvesting, and post-harvest packing. At times assistance is needed with landscaping and property beautification. Because our farm and gardens are exposed to the elements, be aware that working conditions will fluctuate with the weather. Our fields remain muddy for several weeks after rain. Please wear shoes (preferably boots) and clothes that will keep you comfortable and you do not mind getting dirty. Please arrive 10 minutes early (around 845-850am) to allow time for check in. Our sessions start promptly at the scheduled time with a mandatory orientation & project training. Once you arrive at the food bank, enter through the volunteer entrance. There will be a Volunteer Services Team Member at the front desk to greet you. While volunteering in the Community Farm & Garden, you will be doing any of the following duties: - Assist with the planting, caring for and cleaning of fruits, vegetables and other edible plants. - Help with the construction of square foot gardening boxes, raised beds, trellises, walking paths. - Assist with general maintenance of existing structures.
