Event overview

Event Description: MLK Day of Service - Honoring His Legacy

Join the Chicago TMC Platoon this MLK Day as we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through service and community building. We’ll meet at Pullman Tech Workshop, a historic trades workforce training nonprofit located in the historic Pullman neighborhood on Chicago's Far South Side. After gathering, we’ll take a short walk to the historic Greenstone Church, where we will be painting the interior to enhance its space for the Pullman community.

Greenstone Church, named for its serpentine limestone cladding, sits diagonally across from Arcade Park on the corner of 112th Street and Saint Lawrence Avenue. Designed by Solon Beman and completed in 1882, this Richardsonian Romanesque building features a 92-ft. steeple, a large stained-glass rose window, and cherry wood furnishings, including the altar and pews. The church is also home to a rare Steere and Turner pipe organ, containing 1,260 pipes ranging in size from the large front pipes to some as slim as pencils.

Our work will include painting the interior of this remarkable space, completing additional interior projects, and addressing leftover tasks from our previous collaboration at Pullman Tech Workshop with The Fixers. This event reflects our shared commitment to service, collaboration, and community improvement.

Let’s come together to make a meaningful impact and carry forward Dr. King’s vision of unity, service, and equality. Sign up today to join the mission!

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
