Houston Platoon

Event overview

Join The Mission Continues- Houston 2nd Service platoon as we get to enjoy the festivities that kickstart the largest rodeo in the state of Texas. This event is for Thursday March 2nd, which is usually just sponsor night (not open to public). I was able to get 30 wristbands for this night to varies cooking tents. Also called the “World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest,” the Houston Rodeo Cookoff is a Texas sized Houston BBQ Party. Several hundred BBQ cooks convene for three days of cooking competition, dancing and, of course, eating. The 2017 Rodeo Houston cook off draws huge crowds, with a record crowd of 221,229 rodeo cookoff fans sampling the BBQ goodness in 2010. More than 350 rodeo BBQ cook off teams will compete in the Rodeo Houston barbecue cookoff and also help to raise money for charity scholarships. BBQ Cookoff trophies are awarded to the teams with the best dish in each of the three categories (brisket, chicken and spare ribs) as well as a trophy for the overall winner. Awards will also be presented for the most unique pit, most colorful team, cleanest area, and the BBQ team with the best skit. In addition to the 2017 Houston Rodeo BBQ Cookoff serving up great Texas barbecue you can also expect lots of live music as well as The Hideout for the 21+ crowd that wishes to enjoy a few alcoholic beverages to go with their rodeo BBQ cook off. ***Must be an active platoon member with 2nd platoon in order to receive Cookoff passes*** These are to be given to the men and women who put hard work during service projects in the Independence Heights area.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
