Operation Enduring Service - 9/11 Memorial Rose Garden at Sunset Park!

September 18, 2021

11:00 AM - 03:00 PM EDT

New York City Platoon

Event overview

September 11th is a day that changed all our lives and has affected our nation and NYC irreversibly. It marks the stark change in many of our lives as we chose to serve our communities and our nation to protect it from forces that would do them harm. Those choices brought us to foreign lands, introduced us to amazing people, and shaped our ideas about where we call home and what it means to be a community, a tribe.

We celebrate all our fellow citizens who have served in any capacity since that day with a service project at Sunset Park, Brooklyn at the 9/11 Memorial Gardens. The area of Sunset Park in Brooklyn has historically been a mecca of innovation and diversity; however, this innovation and change has also brought deep disparities in the socio-economic circumstance of its diverse residential population, especially as gentrification has continues to impact its citizens. The New York Platoons operational focus is to work with their communities to re-imagine and reinvent spaces and places; strengthening the connections between the people and places they share to support an evolution of what the community is known for.

The Sunset Park Memorial Grove consists of 45 Trees: 16 Yellow wood, 21 Two Winged Silver Bells and 8 White Flowering Red Buds planted in an oval. In addition, the Parks system has planted a triangular garden with 78 White Carpet Roses, 70 Cotoneaster Shrubs, and 3,000 White Dwarf Narcissus. However, the garden has struggled to be maintained, especially during the pandemic.

Please join us on September 18th at the 9/11 Memorial Rose Garden in Sunset Park, Brooklyn as we honor our all those that serve our nation by cleaning up and rejuvenate this Memorial Rose Garden and Grove and returning it to its former glory.

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
