Where We’re Serving
Join us for a day of service on Tuesday, June 13th at English Avenue Campus along with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club at Bellwood and our sponsors at Chick-Fil-A! The Mission Continues has a long-standing partnership with the BAGC at Bellwood. They have hosted multiple fellowships over the last year, and are also the partner site for the Atlanta 2nd Platoon. During OWS, our participants will team up with the young leaders of the BAGC’s Keystone Club to transform a vacant lot known as English Avenue Campus into a vibrant space for widespread community use. The land, owned by the local councilwoman, Mable Thomas, currently has a dilapidated basketball court and several raised planter beds, but little else.
What We’ll Be Doing
Building off of a visioning session with the Keystone Club youth at the BAGC, the team has some exciting plans for English Avenue Campus. Our participants will repaint and restore the basketball court, build picnic areas, a stage and outdoor amphitheater, a children’s garden, and other projects to make the space a useful and engaging community gathering area.
The Activities
There’s a purpose behind each project at English Avenue Campus. Check out the various activities taking place throughout the day: Let’s design - Add an artistic element with mosaics and welcome signs throughout the grounds. Let’s exercise - Boost community fitness opportunities by installing a walking/jogging path and exercise stations. Let’s socialize - Create a picnic area for local gatherings including tables and shade structures. Let’s play - Get out the paintbrush to create four square, hopscotch and a world map, and refresh the basketball court with a layer of new paint and hoops. Let’s beautify - Landscape the way to a relaxation area complete with rose bushes, garden beds, and a walkway. Let’s build - Construct an amphitheater complete with stage and seating, benches with built-in chess boards, and a shade structure to keep the kids cool when playing or planting in the garden.
The Service Impact
Our day of service at English Avenue Campus with BAGC at Bellwood is a testament to the strength of our ongoing community partnerships. Veteran participants and community volunteers will kick off the project at English Avenue Campus, but the work and partnership will continue on after Operation Westside Surge is over through the efforts of our local Atlanta Service Platoons, fellows and our partners from BAGC at Bellwood. We appreciate your support and your time. Volunteers are welcome to work for all or a portion of the project day

Who We Are

The Mission Continues is a national non-profit that empowers veterans to continue serving in our nation’s under-resourced communities, giving veterans the opportunity to keep serving even after the uniform comes off, right here at home. Our programs deploy veterans and volunteers to work alongside nonprofit partners and community leaders to improve educational resources, tackle food insecurity, foster neighborhood identity, and more.

Who should volunteer?

Our service projects are for all veterans with a desire to continue their service and for all non-veterans that want to be part of a nationwide movement to transform communities. Please note, age and accessibility accommodations can be made at any project. There is room for everyone to make an impact.

What is a Service Platoon?

Service Platoons are your opportunity to engage and connect with veterans and community members while generating community impact in a real and tangible way. Led by veteran volunteer platoon leaders, each platoon works with dedicated community partners and volunteers to provide the manpower and support that they need to help them do their work more effectively.

We currently have service platoons in more than 40+ cities across the country that are having events at least once a month. Everyone is invited to serve, regardless of veteran status: a service platoon is for you if you have a passion for service.
