Come on out on 9/11, and help honor one of our national Parks with a deep Military History. Who: In partnership with the National Parks Conservation Association (www.npca.org), the Portland 1st Platoon will be "falling in" on the Fort Vancouver National Park in Vancouver, WA for a "Day Of Service", alongside First Responders from the Vancouver, WA area. This will require physical work ranging from easy to moderate. The Minimum age to participate is 8 years old, so bring the family along. What Type of Work: Area Beautification and Maintenance When is this project: September 11th, 2016 from 12:00 - 4:00 pm Where is it taking place? Fort Vancouver National Park in Vancouver, WA Why are we doing this? Fort Vancouver, WA is one of our National Historic Sites...with not only a deep-rooted Military History, but also a long African American and Hawaiian History. Located on the north bank of the Columbia River, in sight of snowy mountain peaks and a vibrant urban landscape, this park has a rich cultural past. From a frontier fur trading post, to a powerful military legacy, the magic of flight, and the origin of the American Pacific Northwest. The park includes an array of resources unparalleled in the National Park System. Extensive archaeological collections, reconstructed and historic buildings, engaging programs and special events, historic trails, stunning landscapes, as well as lesser known but equally remarkable places. It is a park like no other. But they do require volunteer support...and that's where you come in. Volunteers ages 8 and up will complete the following work: - Power wash the sidewalks at Pearson Air Museum, the Administration Building, and the Visitor Center - Weed the Pearson Air Museum area between the parking lot and 5th street - Weed the waterfront, between the NPS property and Who Song and Larry's Restaurant Residents if the PNW know how near and dear our National Parks are, and Fort Vancouver is no exception. This is our 9/11 Support Project, alongside our Brothers and Sisters in Emergency Services, so please make sure that you mark your calendar for this one.
