March: In honor of Women’s History Month, Pittsburgh platoons came together for an all-woman service project at Center of Life is a community empowerment organization in Hazelwood that offers academic, music and sports programming. April: Our Columbus, OH Service Platoon kicked off a new partnership with the Mid-Ohio Foodbank, in efforts to combat food insecurity in Columbus’ Southside Neighborhood through work with an urban farm and multiple food pantries.
May: We held our third annual Women Veterans Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C.. Over the course of the weekend, 75 women veterans came together to gain an expanded network, an abundance of resources, and a new outlook on overcoming professional roadblocks. June: Nearly 100 veteran volunteers from across the country converged in Los Angeles for our third Mass Deployment, Operation Watts Is Worth It. A Mass Deployment mobilizes veterans from across the country alongside local partners and volunteers in a single city over the course of a week-long project.
July: Our volunteers spent their summer vacations serving during our Summer Service Slam event, in which platoon members took part in five large-scale service projects in every part of the country over the course of three weekends. August: Mr. George W. Bush dropped by a service project in Philadelphia, and poses for a photo with Platoon Leader Anthony Fedele.
September: We gathered over 150 Platoon Leadership Team Members in Houston for the fifth annual Service Platoon Leadership Summit. Here, a group of platoon leaders hone their collaboration skills. October: We launched our new program, Service Leadership Corps, kicking off in Newark, NJ. Throughout the program, Corps members will build their leadership skills alongside a national network of veterans. November: Six veteran-led service platoons and over 100 veterans from across Florida and Puerto Rico rallied in Orlando to help families displaced by Hurricane Maria in honor of Veterans Day as they transition to long-term housing. December: In Jacksonville and throughout the country, service platoons participated in Wreaths Across America to remember, honor, and teach.
