OMCS DAY 4: Revitalizing VFW Post 76
Nov 19, 2024
June 24, 2024 was another monumental day in the ongoing effort to give back to San Antonio’s military community. On Day 4 of Operation Military City Salute, volunteers from The Mission Continues, alongside over 100 employees from USAA, gathered to make a lasting impact at the VFW Post 76 Sam Houston Post.
This day of service was a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of this post, as well as the continued dedication of the military community and their supporters to one another. Together, the volunteers worked to revitalize the nearly century-old building and its surrounding areas, making significant improvements that will benefit members and the community for years to come.
Honoring History and Community
The VFW Post 76 is not just a building—it’s a home for veterans of all generations. Located in the heart of San Antonio, this post has been a vital resource for those who have served in conflicts ranging from World War II to the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Its significance in the community goes beyond its history—it serves as a gathering place, offering veterans a supportive environment to connect with one another, seek help for various needs, and engage in a range of outreach programs.
Acquired in June 1947, the Petty House, which now serves as the headquarters of VFW Post 76, has long been a place for veterans to gather, share stories, and seek support. In addition to providing essential services like assistance with VA claims, mental health resources, and support for homeless veterans, Post 76 is also involved in numerous community outreach programs, including scholarships for youth, and initiatives like Patriot Pen and Voice of Democracy.
The Transformative Projects Completed
The work done by TMC volunteers was nothing short of transformative. These efforts not only improved the physical space of the VFW Post 76, but they also reinforced the sense of unity, pride, and support within the San Antonio military community.
Some of the key projects completed during this day included:
- Beautifying the Outdoor Area: Volunteers worked tirelessly to revitalize the outdoor spaces surrounding VFW Post 76. From fresh landscaping to repairing and restoring picnic tables, the outdoor areas were given a much-needed refresh. These spaces now provide a more welcoming environment for veterans and their families to gather, relax, and enjoy their time at the post. Whether it’s enjoying a meal together or hosting community events, these beautified outdoor spaces will serve as a central hub for socializing and connection.
- Improving Drainage Around the Post: One of the major improvements involved addressing the drainage issues around the post, which had long been an ongoing concern. By improving the drainage system, volunteers helped prevent water accumulation that could cause damage to the building and grounds. This practical upgrade not only enhances the overall functionality of the space but also ensures the post remains a safe and comfortable place for all who visit.
- Adding Additional Seating Options: In addition to the landscaping work, volunteers also focused on adding more seating options around the post. This includes benches and additional seating areas that will give guests and members more space to relax and engage with each other. The added seating will also support the many events and programs that take place at VFW Post 76, providing a comfortable setting for veterans to participate in social activities, meetings, and ceremonies.
Strengthening Community Bonds
Beyond the physical improvements, the collaboration on Day 4 of Operation Military City Salute further strengthened the bonds within the San Antonio military community. The collective efforts of veterans, active-duty service members, and their supporters created a sense of camaraderie that mirrors the spirit of the VFW Post 76 itself.
The Lasting Impact
The work completed on Day 4 of Operation Military City Salute will have a lasting impact on both the physical space of VFW Post 76 and the sense of community it fosters. The improvements made will ensure that the post remains a place of honor and connection for veterans and their families, while the strengthened bonds between the San Antonio military community and its supporters will continue to inspire future service and collaboration.
