9/11 Day of Service at Ellis Island

September 09, 2017

10:00 AM - 02:00 PM EDT

New York City Platoon

Event overview

As the nation observes the upcoming anniversary of September 11, 2001, New York City-based post-9/11 veterans and supporters of The Mission Continues are deploying to Ellis Island once again for an impactful service project. Located in the New York Harbor and known as the Gateway to America for over 12 million immigrants from the 1890s to 1950s, Ellis Island is an enduring American symbol of freedom and hope. In 2012, flood waters from Hurricane Sandy covered almost all of Ellis Island damaging a majority of its infrastructure. Ongoing repairs and recovery efforts have helped Ellis Island return to its pre-Sandy condition but there’s still more to be done. To help revitalize Ellis Island, veterans and community members will spend this day of service working side-by-side, removing trash and debris and refurbishing the grounds. This service project is part of an ongoing collaboration between The Mission Continues and the National Parks Service and is designed to improve public access to the history and natural beauty of national parks located in New York City. TRANSPORTATION: There is only 1 way to get onto Ellis Island - by ferry at Battery Park or Liberty State Park. Ferry tickets will be provided. Detailed project information, ferry departure times and ferry ticket pick up information will be given after Labor Day. We hope to see you there!
