Event overview

Martin Luther King Jr. was, is a hero of our time who epitomized selfless service and sacrifice for the common goods, for social progress and social justice. It is in his vision that we welcome you and are excited to host the first major service project in 2019 in conjunction with our national remembrance of Martin Luther King Jr. OUR MISSION: TWENTY (20) very special members of the Portland 1st Service Platoon are needed to assist The Children's Book Bank of Portland to prepare and pack books for low-income children in the city. This is incredible opportunity is provided "exclusively" for The Mission Continues team in Portland. This is a "FIRST COME FIRST SERVE" opportunity. Please register early and commit on your calendar. The kids need you. WHERE: The Children's Book Bank (CBB) CHALLENGE & SOLUTION: For children in poverty, one of the biggest obstacles to literacy development (which begins at birth) is the scarcity of books in the home. While the ratio of books to children in middle-income neighborhoods is approximately 13 books to 1 child, the ratio in low-income neighborhoods is a mere 1 book to 300 children. The Children’s Book Bank narrows the book gap by providing the community with a place for families to donate the books their children have outgrown, moving thousands and thousands of children’s books into the homes of kids in need. PROJECT SCOPE: Come lend a hand as we spruce-up community donated books which will later be distributed to low-income preschool children in the Portland area! Every gently-used donated book is inspected and cleaned by volunteers. Tasks include wiping covers, taping torn pages, erasing scribbles, covering inscriptions, and reinforcing worn spines. Supplies will be provided by CBB's team. Light breakfast pastries and water will be provided.
