Originally established in 1924 by volunteers in Alexandria, Northern Virginia Family Services is in Northern Virginia communities to help people in need. Those first volunteers in Alexandria noticed that poor children in their community had no coats and their families had no coal to heat their homes. NVFS addressed those basic and critical needs. More than 90 years later, NVFS continues to address our local communities’ needs with a wide range of programs designed to deal with the current problems of today. NVFS has grown to help more than 34,000 families and individuals every year. The 8,000-square-foot Hunger Resource Center (HRC) serves more than 600 families per month, and nearly 9,000 unique individuals per year, with food and essentials. The HRC also houses NVFS’ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) outreach and nutritional education programs to ensure families are educated on and able to afford healthy food. Last year, more than 700 low-income families in Prince William County shared a special holiday meal together on Thanksgiving because of tremendous support from the community. More than 400 volunteers worked tirelessly the week leading up to the holiday to sort incoming donations, assemble and distribute meal packages, pack surplus food into boxes, and load surplus food into an 18-wheeler trailer (filled top to bottom, front to back). This year, DC 5th platoon is mobilizing to help NVFS unpack holiday season donations at the SERVE Hunger Resource Center in Manassas. Volunteer spots are limited, so be sure to register soon!
