More than five million men and women have served our country in uniform since 9/11. Each May, our nation reflects on the achievements, successes and sacrifices of our military as part of National Military Appreciation Month.

From celebrating the end of World War II on V-E Day to recognizing soldiers’ loved ones on Military Spouse Appreciation Day, and honoring the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice on Memorial Day – May is a month we honor every generation’s legacy of service to our country.

Today we recognize the thousands men and women returning home and answering a new call of service to our local communities in need through The Mission Continues. Together, they are defining a new legacy that will shape a generation. They share an understanding: some of the greatest accomplishments of service are ahead of them.

Just look to Hyacinth Diaz, who finished her fellowship at Community Family Centers in Houston where she taught computer classes, resume writing and interview skills to low-income adults. And members of San Diego 1st Platoon, who recently transformed a local middle school’s garden providing a safe place for students to learn the importance of healthy eating and sustainability.

Those are just a few examples. Here’s a brief glimpse into the tremendous impact the veterans in our programs are making at the national level.
