Jean Carlos Riverareyes served for five years in the United States Navy as an Air Traffic Controller. Growing up, Jean Carlos always dreamed about traveling the world. Shortly after he graduated high school, he decided follow his dream by enlisting in the military.
During his time in service, Jean Carlos was deployed four times, three times to the Gulf and one time to Djibouti, Africa. His main duty was to expedite and maintain a safe and orderly flow of air traffic. He was also responsible for clerical duties, fitness programs for the division, and maintenance of certain equipment. Due to medical conditions, Jean Carlos was not able to finish his last tour in Djibouti and was honorably discharged in May 2010. Upon his return home, Jean Carlos decided not only to pursue his education, but also continue serving in his community.
Through The Mission Continues, Jean Carlos was granted a fellowship with the Armed Services YMCA in San Diego, CA. Armed Services YMCA is dedicated to improving the mind, body, and spirit of military service members and their families. Jean Carlos uses his leadership skills and fitness experience gained in the military to assist wounded veterans in rehabilitation clinics. He also contributes to the organization’s recreational, social, and educational outreach programs.
After his fellowship, Jean Carlos hopes to pursue higher education and one day earn a career in law enforcement.
