Warriors in Service
Through the Warriors in Service initiative, The Mission Continues offers group volunteer opportunities to “wounded warriors” who are still in the midst of their recoveries. These opportunities can be one-time engagements or recurring commitments, and they may serve as precursors to full Mission Continues Fellowships. In each instance, the projects are organized, lead, and carried out by a group of “wounded warriors."
Continuing the Mission
Like The Mission Continues Fellowship program, Warriors in Service projects allow wounded military members to carry on their mission of service. The spirit of service and the support of working in groups are especially familiar to military members, and through these projects, “wounded warriors” demonstrate the strengths, skills, and resilience of our military.
An Opportunity to Lead
Warriors in Service projects are aimed toward Army Warrior Transition Units and Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Units. The service members assigned to these units have very important jobs—healing from wounds and transitioning either back to an active role or out of the military. However, the role of “wounded warrior” can be unfamiliar to many soldiers and marines. Through Warriors in Service projects these military members can serve in their community, and for some, they can step back into the familiar leadership role that they once occupied in the military.
Tool Kits
The Mission Continues supports these projects by sharing ideas for projects, connecting participants with local charitable organizations, and providing tool kits to assist in the planning and execution of projects. Some projects will be one-time efforts. Other times entire units may pledge to provide volunteers on a regular basis to complete a large project at a charitable organization. In other situations, groups may volunteer individually at a location—for example, five soldiers who each volunteer one day per week, covering the entire week. Whatever style is chosen, all projects will be organized and lead by one or more “wounded warriors”.
The possibilities are numerous;no matter the method, it is important to remember that many wounded service members still yearn to serve their country. Through Warriors in Service projects, they are truly able to continue their mission of service.
