Each year, Neighborhood Houses serves as a registration and distribution site for the United Way 100 Neediest Cases program. In 2009, we registered more than 1600 families at our three neighborhood-based sites. This is nearly 100 of the total number served by the United Way's holiday assistance program in 2009. We are seeking volunteers to register families and enter data into the United Way's database during our annual registration day. We expect nearly 1000 familes to come through the doors of our three centers (Caroline Mission, 2828 Caroline Dignity House, 812 Union Hand St. James Center, 1455 College) throughout the day, which will run from 8am-4pm. Volunteers will verify demographic and contact information, assist families in completing the short paper registration forms, and input data into the United Way database. Volunteers inputting data will need at least basic computer skills.

While this is not precisely what Mission Continues has advertised, it is our belief that there needs to be recognition that Americans have served communities around the world, and continue to do so.  This project, run by the U.S. Embassy in Zimbabwe, has mission personnel, many of whom are veterans of the Vietnam era and later, volunteering service on a number of Embassy "Self-Help" Projects designed to improve the lives of poor and underserved Zimbabweans.  Zimbabwean veterans of a number of past conflicts will also be invited to participate in this project (see attached flyer), which will kick off on September 11 and culminate in a program for local orphans on November 11.  Ambassador Charles A. Ray, a 20-year army veteran and Vietnam-era vet, will lead the project.  Projects that will be supported are mainly in the rural districts around the capitol, Harare.

To celebrate those who have so bravely served our counry and protected our freedom, volunteers will be painting patriotic sun catchers for residents or patients at the VA Medical Center in Jefferson Barracks. The project will be conducted at our Chapter office. It is estimated that 30 volunteers should be able to complete the project within 3 hours. Once the sun catchers are dry (usually in 3 days), they will be distributed to the patients or residents. No special skills are involved other than being creative and to have full use of at least one hand. The reason we chose the VA hospital is because we already have a relationship there since the Chapter is affiliated with the MS Center at the VA.
